Excel uses RANK.EQ, RANK.AVG, and the older RANK function to find a number's position in a list, with RANK.EQ (assigns same rank to ties, skips next) and RANK.AVG (averages ranks for ties) replacing the legacy RANK function, all using syntax: RANK.EQ(number, ref, [order]), where order 0/omitted is largest to smallest (descending), and 1 is smallest to largest (ascending).
