West Somerset Railway | Bishops Lydeard to Minehead | 7th August 2025

A cloudy and sunny Thursday in Somerset as we travel along the UK's longest heritage railway for 20 miles from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead, the West Somerset Railway.

We start off at Taunton on the Great Western Mainline after alighting from a CrossCountry train, we then head for the WSR at Bishops Lydeard Station to catch our train which is double headed by a GWR Manor Class steam locomotive 'Elrelstoke Manor' and a Class 33 Crompton diesel locomotive D6566 all the way down to Minehead.

The West Somerset Line runs between Bishops Lydeard, Crowcombe Heathfield, Stogumber, Williton, Doniford Halt, Watchet, Washford, Blue Anchor, Dunster and Minehead.

The West Somerset trains were steam hauled with diesel assistance due to the heatwave and reducing fire risk.

At Minehead Station, we watch the steam and diesel locomotives run around the train for a good departure.
