How a pilot from the Black Fleet landed a PBY on the open sea under MG42 fire and saved 154 men
Under heavy enemy fire, with MG42 rounds tearing across the water, a lone pilot from the Black Fleet faced an impossible choice: turn back and save his aircraft, or land on the open sea and try to save men everyone else had already written off as lost.
This video tells the true story of how a Black pilot, underestimated and sidelined because of racism, brought a slow, vulnerable PBY Catalina down onto rough ocean waters while German machine guns raked the surface around him. With no cover, no air support, and damage mounting by the second, he maneuvered again and again to pull survivors from the water — ultimately rescuing 154 men who would have died without him.
It’s a story of courage under fire, split-second decisions, and a hero whose name was nearly erased from history. While others measured success in victories and medals, he measured it in lives saved — one impossible landing at a time.
