In this CardioNerds interview, correspondent Alaa Diab, MD, MPH, Academic Internist & Researcher, Wayne State University, speaks with expert faculty Stephen Juraschek, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, to unpack the design and real-world impact of the GoFresh Trial, which sought to make heart-healthy DASH-style eating accessible to Black families living in food deserts. Rather than relying on controlled “metabolic kitchen” meals, the trial partnered with grocery delivery services and registered dietitians to help participants create culturally tailored DASH diets using household groceries, with a focus on increasing potassium, reducing sodium, and keeping saturated fats low. The approach produced meaningful improvements in hypertension and LDL cholesterol during the active intervention, highlighting the power of food access and personalized coaching in advancing health equity—while also revealing the critical need for sustained structural support to maintain gains once resources are withdrawn.
