When Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the Marriage Equality Act into law just six months into his first term in 2011, New York became the first of just a handful of states to make same-sex marriage legal through legislation, not the courts.

Integral to that reality were Kitty and her then fiancee Cheryle, the first lesbian New York couple to wed. They were married just after midnight in front of Niagara Falls a month after the law was signed. They had been together over a decade by the time they decided to lobby for marriage equality in their own backyard
