Michigan is transforming the way we think about recycling and materials management. With new policies, funding, expanded infrastructure, and innovative initiatives like NextCycle Michigan, the state is leading the charge toward a more sustainable, circular economy. This session will explore how Michigan is increasing recycling access, reducing waste, and creating economic opportunities through responsible materials management. Join us to learn about the latest advancements, challenges, and how businesses and communities can play a role in shaping a greener future.
About the speaker:
With a degree from MSU in Resource Development/Environmental Policy Studies and 25 years of experience in materials management programs, Tracy has worked in the public and private sectors managing both municipal and commercial solid waste and recycling programs, and at the regional level working in surface water quality. Her roles have spanned a wide range of responsibilities including grant management, outreach, education, industry training, waste and recycling audits, MRF tours, special event management and as a Senior Account Manager for a total battery management company.
Currently, Tracy is one of 5 Recycling Specialists for the State of Michigan Department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) where she provides technical assistance, outreach, education and grant management to communities and organizations in the northern Michigan and Upper Peninsula regions.
Tracy is in her 6th year as a Michigan Recycling Coalition Board Member and serves as the secretary on the Executive Committee. She is a 2019 graduate of Great Lakes Leadership Academy’s Emerging Leaders Program.

The Sierra Club Southeast Michigan Group (SEMG) features free presentations as part of SEMG's monthly, first-Thursday 7pm meetings. These meetings may be on Zoom or in person and begin with 10 minutes of announcements after which the speaker is introduced. The presentations last about an hour including Q&A and Sierra Club members and supporters, along with the general public, are invited.
