Bottlenose Dolphin super pod in the Garden Route

In the Southern Cape, Bottlenose Dolphins can be seen in pods ranging from 20 to 50 dolphins. On occasion, large breeding pods form, with between 500 and 1000 dolphins, which usually occurs at the start of the sardine run. On Sunday, we received a report of a large pod of dolphins swimming west towards Wilderness. Stopping to scan for them from the view paragliding launch site, the front of the pod could be seen swimming behind the surf zone, cruising at a slow pace and spread out over 500m.
It was a wonderful to observe the social dynamics with adults with small calves clustered in groups of between 10 and 20 dolphins. Groups of juvenile dolphins chased each other, essential play to develop their hunting skills. In all, it took approximately 40 minutes of the pod swim past our view point.
