A Cervical Ripening Balloon (CRB), also known as a Foley balloon or balloon catheter, is used to help prepare the cervix for labor induction. This mechanical method is employed when the cervix is not yet ready for labor.
Procedure of Cervical Dilation.
Insertion: A deflated balloon catheter is inserted into the cervical canal. The balloon is then inflated with sterile saline, usually between 30-80 milliliters.
Mechanism: The inflated balloon exerts pressure on the cervix, encouraging it to soften, thin out (efface), and open up (dilate). This mimics the natural process of labor.
Duration: The balloon typically remains in place for several hours to overnight, or until it falls out on its own, indicating that the cervix has dilated sufficiently.
Monitoring: Throughout the procedure, the mother and baby are monitored to ensure their safety and well-being.
