When Henry VIII broke with the Catholic church he dissolved the rich abbeys and monasteries and put the money into building coastal defences, the Henrician 'device' forts such as Pendennis, Camber, Walmer and Deal. Portland Castle was one of the smaller buildings, barely larger than a blockhouse. The building functioned until after WW2 and was the scene for the major embarkation of U.S. troops destined to land at Omaha Beach. Two surviving D-Day 'Phoenix' caissons remain offshore.
Today it is in the care of English Heritage.
