Let’s go hiking in the mountains of northern New Mexico! Today we’re going to climb up Cerro Grande, a 10,200 foot peak in the Jemez Mountains, northwest of Santa Fe and west of Los Alamos. Our climb up will cover roughly 1,200 feet in elevation gain, crossing in and out of pine forest and giving us some spectacular views across multiple mountain ranges and the nearby Valles Caldera. Let’s go!
Cerro Grande is in the Santa Fe National Forest and part of the Bandelier National Monument. The landscape of this area is bit different from the desert landscapes that most might expect of New Mexico. The Cerro Grande trail covers 4 miles up and back and takes about 2 hours, 15 minutes up and back down on average, according to trail guide. This hike was on 24 July, 2025. Please enjoy and thank you for watching.
