Here's the last leg of my journey along the Bulgarian E4, where I crossed the Slavyanka Mountains on the Bulgarian/Greek border.
The Slavyanka was a pretty creepy and lonely place. I walked for hours upon end along empty forestry tracks. The only other footprints I saw looked like they'd been left by wolves, and there were lots of weird abandoned shelter type things made out of tarpaulin...
When I finally reached the Slavyanka Hut, eager to stock up at the only known water source on my route, I found it was also abandoned (except for a small cat) and the water source wasn't flowing either. I detoured to find water, and then climbed up out of the forest, away from any bears. My last campsite in Bulgaria was a classy one: I had panoramic views over the Rhodope, Pirin and Slavyanka ranges, and witnessed a spectacular sunrise from my frost-covered tent.
