In a powerful address delivered at the UN Palestinian Rights Committee event titled “The Destruction of the Health System in Palestine: A Lifeline in Peril for Women and Girls”, held on 20 March 2025, Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, condemned the ongoing violence in Gaza and the systemic collapse of its health infrastructure. Speaking as a “childhood survivor of apartheid South Africa,” Dr. Mofokeng described the crisis as a “decades-long genocide” and part of a “sustained imperialist agenda” that disproportionately targets women, children, and healthcare workers. She emphasized that the “destruction of the health system... is incompatible with the realization of the right to health.”
Dr. Mofokeng highlighted the “widespread violations” of international humanitarian law ⚖️, including attacks on medical personnel🩺, denial of sexual and reproductive health services, and the torture and detention of healthcare workers. “Pregnant women are not able to receive adequate nutrition and care, putting both their lives and the lives of their unborn children at risk,” she stated. Calling for an end to silence and complicity from global leaders, she urged the international community to “build across movements” and to ensure that the rights to dignity, equality, and health for Palestinian women and girls are fully protected. “There must be consequences and accountability in ways we are yet to see,” she concluded ⚠️.
