천사의 찬송 Hark! The Herald Angels Sing - Felix Mendelssohn (가톨릭성가 107)

＊가톨릭 성가 107번 '천사의 찬송'은 독일 작곡가 펠릭스 멘델스존(Felix Mendelssohn, 1809~1847)이
1840년 인쇄술 발명 400주년을 기념하여 작곡한 '축제노래(Festgesang)'의 두 번째 악장 선율을 기반으로 합니다.
이 선율에 영국의 교회 음악가 윌리엄 H. 커밍스(William H. Cummings, 1831~1915)가
찰스 웨슬리(Charles Wesley)의 시 'Hark! The Herald Angels Sing'의 가사를 붙여 오늘날의 성탄 성가로 완성되었습니다.

멘델스존은 원래 이 선율이 교회 음악에 적합하지 않다고 생각했으나,
현재는 전 세계적으로 사랑받는 성탄 성가로 자리매김하였습니다.
이 성가는 성탄절 미사에서 자주 불리며,
아기 예수님의 탄생을 기뻐하는 천사들의 찬송을 표현하고 있습니다.
