This week, Brookfield Zoo Chicago animals were tree-ted to special enrichment! Now that the trees adorning the park from Tree Trim have been taken down for the season, several of the trees were distributed to animals for them to explore. The brown bears received trees with hidden watermelon, honeydew melon, and apples; the polar bears' tree included a meaty bone, carrots, and lettuce; the lions' tree featured frozen milk and meat; the bison trees had hay, and they primarily rub their heads and bodies against the tree as a form of enrichment.
The tree enrichment is a great way to keep the animals' minds and bodies active, plus it helps the Zoo repurpose several of the trees. The remaining trees will be turned into mulch, and then used by our groundskeeping team to beautify the Zoo's 235 acres this spring!
