Welcome to the first stop on our 7-city Romania Christmas market road trip — Timișoara! Known as the cultural heart of western Romania, Timișoara is famous for its elegant architecture, vibrant squares, and festive spirit. And we couldn’t have picked a better place to kick off our Romanian Christmas adventures!
We arrived just in time for opening day of the Christmas markets, which was also our very first time experiencing a Christmas market opening day! The atmosphere was electric: there were official speeches, a military band performance, a Christmas princess parading through the square, local children helping to light the Christmas tree, and even a live performance by a The Voice Romania singer.
Yes, it was crowded (opening day + weekend + evening = triple whammy), but that only added to the excitement. The market itself had beautiful light displays, a Christmas train, children’s workshops, a giant Ferris wheel, multiple carousels, and an ice rink. And of course — all the festive treats, Romanian foods, and plenty of warm vin fiert (mulled wine) to keep us cozy. It was the perfect way to start our holiday season in Romania.
