What does 419 mean?
Also called the "Nigerian letter" and "advance-fee fraud," the 419 fraud refers to a section of the criminal code in Nigeria. It refers to fax and email spam claiming that recipients can receive money (often millions of dollars or Euros) simply by providing details of their bank accounts to the criminals.
General characteristics of a 419 Scam:
The communication is generally sent by someone claiming to be in a position of authority, such as a Government Official, Prince, Chief, Doctor, Solicitor, Lawyer or Bank Official. They may use emotional bribery, such as claiming someone has died or is suffering from an illness.
