The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo leo) is the only species in the world found in Gir National Park, Gujarat state, India, with the help of the Indian government, forest department, and local people, the lion population is increasing, the lions are now recapturing their lost areas. The lion is a social animal, so lions and humans are friends with each other, and lions are bringing economic benefits to farmers and the tourism industry.

Lions were hunted indiscriminately during the monarchy, with only 11 Asiatic lions remaining in 1904. Then Nawab Mohabbatkhanji II of Junagadh banned lion hunting and started conservation. Since then, the lion population has been steadily increasing. This event is considered to be the biggest success story in the world. Currently, lions live in an area of 30,000 km in and around the Gir forest, the total lion population is estimated at 674 with an average growth rate of 28.87% in the last 15th census conducted in June 2020.
