How do you embody Southeast Asian identities and voices in a symphony?
This is exactly the question that composers Danny Imson, Lee Chie Tsang, Hoàng Phó, Jonathan Shin, Thatchatham Silsupan, Gema Swaratyagita and Syafiqah ‘Adha Sallehin set out to explore when they embarked on the Southeast Asian Golden Age Symphony project.
The mission was bold: Create a symphony that reflects the vibrance and diversity of Southeast Asia, collaborating with fellow composers from across the region (Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia).
Yet the co-creation process brought its challenges: Finding a unifying thread through the work whilst embracing a multitude of ideas; and bringing the artistic vision to life working with fellow collaborators. How did it all unfold?
Follow us behind the scenes as we see how the SEA Symphony was created – from conceptualisation through to fruition.
We are grateful to Mr Nicholas Nash and Ms Phalgun Raju for their support in enabling this commission.
