All about the Bible!
This video provides an introduction to the Bible, describing it as sacred literature uniquely from God (0:19). The principal author is God, who used human authors inspired by divine inspiration (1:39). The Old Testament covers about 4,000 years of information, while the New Testament was written in a relatively short period of 70-90 years (0:54-1:36).
The Bible is divided into two main parts:
Old Testament (OT): Consists of 46 books (5:29). The term "testament" is synonymous with "covenant" (4:41-4:59). The Old Testament outlines several covenants God made with humanity:
Adam (7:46): A covenant of unity broken by Adam, leading to curses but also a promise of salvation (7:50-8:59).
Noah (9:02): God promises to save Noah and his family from the flood, with the rainbow as a sign (9:08-9:37).
Abraham (9:48): God chooses Abraham and promises land, kingship, and a worldwide blessing, with circumcision as the sign (9:50-10:35).
Moses (11:18): God makes a nation of Israel and gives them the law as a covenant sign (11:21-12:00).
David (12:46): God promises David that one of his descendants would be the Messiah and sit on his throne forever (12:48-13:14). The Old Testament is subdivided into Law (Torah/Pentateuch) (13:50), Historical Books (13:54), Wisdom Books (14:05), and Prophetical Books (14:32).
New Testament (NT): Contains 27 books (16:02).
The sixth covenant is the Covenant of Jesus, which brings a new and everlasting covenant (16:09-17:02). Jesus fulfills all the previous Old Testament covenants (17:17-18:16). The sacraments are the signs of this new covenant (16:22-16:58).
The New Testament includes the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), which provide information on Jesus's life and message (18:21-19:34).
The Acts of the Apostles, written by Luke, details the history of the early church (19:36-19:48).
14 letters attributed to St. Paul (Epistles) teach about Jesus and the gospel message (19:51-20:27).
Seven Catholic letters written by other apostles are universal, addressed to the church in general (20:31-21:05).
The Book of Revelation is the final prophetic book (21:18-21:41).
The video also discusses four senses of reading the Bible (22:24):
Literal sense: The direct and immediate meaning, which includes symbolism and metaphor, but is not literalistic (22:56-27:41).
Spiritual senses: Deeper messages from God (22:43-22:49), subdivided into:
Allegorical/Typical sense: Interpreting people and events as types of later people and events, especially in Christ (27:43-28:32).
Moral/Tropological sense: What the Bible teaches about how to act morally (28:33-29:12).
Anagogical sense: How everything ultimately points to heaven and future glory (29:14-29:43).
For proper interpretation, it's recommended to:
Read the Bible with the mind of the Church (31:01).
Start by reading the Gospels (31:23).
Utilize prayer and attend Mass (31:33).
Refer to commentaries by theologians and the Catechism of the Catholic Church (31:46-33:17).
