The 13 Worst Box Office DISASTERS of 1952 Hollywood’s Costliest Mistakes

In 1952, Hollywood lost more money than at any point in its history. Television invaded American living rooms, the government dismantled the studio system, and legendary directors alongside beloved stars delivered one expensive failure after another. These are the thirteen films that nearly bankrupted the movie industry.

RKO Pictures haemorrhaged over ten million dollars across thirty-one films. MGM watched their biggest star deliver his first money-losing picture in seventeen years. And one comedy legend's masterpiece was banned from American screens for two decades — not because of quality, but because of politics.

From casting disasters that defied belief to studio interference that sabotaged directors' visions, these forgotten flops reveal the chaos behind Golden Age Hollywood's glamorous façade.

THE FILMS:
Plymouth Adventure — MGM's Thanksgiving turkey cost a fortune and earned brutal reviews. What went so wrong with this Mayflower epic that its director retired from filmmaking forever?

The Belle of New York — Fred Astaire avoided this project for years, even retiring from show business to escape it. His instincts proved correct in spectacular fashion.

Limelight — Charlie Chaplin's final American film wasn't destroyed by critics. What happened while he was literally crossing the Atlantic Ocean changed everything.

Washington Story — Dore Schary's pro-Congress picture during the witch hunt era seemed like a sure thing. The box office had other ideas.

Alice in Wonderland — Walt Disney's ambitious animated adaptation spent thirteen years in development. Disney himself blamed one fundamental problem with the main character.

Macao — Two directors, eighteen months of production chaos, and fights on set created a textbook example of how troubled filmmaking destroys profitability.

The Big Sky — Howard Hawks delivered a frontier epic shot entirely on location. Then the studio cut twenty minutes and, in Hawks's words, ended the film's chances.

Androcles and the Lion — One of Hollywood's most baffling casting decisions destroyed this George Bernard Shaw adaptation. The original lead's footage is presumed lost forever.

Rancho Notorious — Fritz Lang's expressionist Western confused audiences in 1952. Decades later, critics completely changed their minds.
The Lusty Men — Nicholas Ray's rodeo drama struggled in urban theaters but found devoted fans elsewhere. Today it holds a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.

One Minute to Zero — Howard Hughes's final film as producer arrived during RKO's most catastrophic year. The Pentagon refused to endorse it for one controversial scene.

Clash by Night — Fritz Lang's second 1952 release featured a rising young actress named Marilyn Monroe. It still couldn't escape RKO's collapsing fortunes.
