The structure and shape of proteins is critical to their function — and to unravel biological functions and systems, and identify diseases and create drugs to combat them, we have to understand protein structures. For decades this has been a fiendishly difficult problem, with years and vast sums of money required just to work out the shape of even a single complex protein. Then, in just the last few years, AI models have changed everything — algorithms like Google DeepMind's AlphaFold can work out existing structures in hours or minutes, show how proteins can fit and work together, and even predict novel structures for powerful new therapies.

A.Prof. Kate Michie is Chief Scientist of the Structural Biology Facility (MWAC) at the University of NSW. In this video she is speaking to students at ISS2025: Quanta to Quarks, the 44th Professor Harry Messel International Science School, held at the University of Sydney, Australia, in July 2025.
Kate's second lecture at ISS2025 on AI and Protein Folding: • How AlphaFold has changed biology forever ...
