BRASS FROM THE PAST: Extremely Rare Early 1900s V.F. Cerveny & S. Top Action Rotary Valve (TARV) Bb/A Trumpet. Made in Koenigrats, Czech Republic. This trumpet has very unique rotary valves invented by V.F. Cerveny and patented in 1873. These valves are called Walzenventile or “roller valves”. This roller valve mechanism is basically rotary valves that have been rotated 90° from their typical position. This was done to simplify the mechanism, by increasing the mechanical advantage of the lever system. The 1873 patent also covered the spring tension adjusting screws, seen in my adjusting demonstration. This mechanism was an extra cost option on their higher grades of instruments. This horn was imported to Chicago by Louis Vitak for his music company. He was the sole US Agent. Listen to sounds from the past. About 125 years ago more or less. I begin the demonstration in the key of Bb and then change to the key of A. Since this horn was made in the Czech Republic, here is a composition by a well-known Czech composer, written about 25 years before this horn was made. Antonin Dvorak: “Slavonic Dance No. 1”.
