The May 21, 2025 monthly BVAS evening presentation was on Birds of the Central Sierra Nevada.
Rachel Clark is a wildlife biologist and professional guide based in Fresno. Growing up in Fowler, Rachel began birding at nine after spotting a Western Tanager in her parents’ backyard. Today, she works part-time as a wildlife biologist for two environmental consulting firms and runs her own company,
Central California Birding Tours.
The Sierra Nevada offers diverse habitats, including oak savannah, chaparral,
coniferous forests, meadows, lakes, canyons, and treeless peaks. This region is home to a variety of bird species, many of which are range-restricted western specialties. Rachel’s talk will feature elusive birds found on the western slope of the Central Sierra Nevada, including the Mountain Quail, Hermit Warbler, Williamson’s Sapsucker, White-headed Woodpecker, Sooty Grouse, and the Yosemite subspecies of the Great Gray Owl.
Rachel will provide tips for birding, highlighting the best places to find these
species and offering helpful identification techniques, including using sound to differentiate bird calls.
