Indian South Africans: The role they played during apartheid

Apartheid is often characterized by the struggles Black South Africans experienced under strict "apartness" laws that limited the freedoms of individuals and entire communities.

What is often less described is the same discrimination Indian South Africans endured under apartheid. Many were jailed as political prisoners.

Despite facing similar injustices, Indian and Black South Africans spent decades fighting the racist practices within their own communities. Even Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandel wrestled to overcome the division between the two groups.

Eventually Black and Indian South Africans united in an effort to overcome their oppression.
