►The electric starter motor was revolutionary in its day for taking the risk out of starting your engine. However, burnt-out electric starter motors became the next worst thing. It's gotten better on modern cars, but your vintage Porsche 911 is not one of those cars, so a starter motor replacement is a situation you'll likely find yourself in.
Starters are relatively simple pieces. They have the big portion being the motor itself, and the smaller cylinder off its side, which is the solenoid. The solenoid receives voltage when you activate the key, which then sends power to the motor. Both components can fail, though it's typically the solenoid. Either way, the starter not activating when you turn the key is a sign of potential failure.
In this video, Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro's Professional DIY'er, replaces the starter motor on a vintage air-cooled Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera.
