When I was a young lad I sat all alone
And I dreamed of leavin' my Newfoundland home,
The hardships my father had faced on the sea
Was not a life I was planning for me.
I wanted to ramble and always be free
And this little island was no place to be,
I was down on my luck and afraid of hard times,
I packed up my bags and I left it behind.
I was out in the world and content just to roam,
I wandered away from my Newfoundland home,
Miles from my family and friends dear to me,
I sat there for hours and think of the sea.
The years passed so quickly and I have grown old
I've spent my life searchin' for silver and gold,
But of all other places I've seen in this world
There's no place compared to our own priceless pearl.
I lay here so feeble now, miles from my home
My journey is over, no more will I roam,
I picture the hillside, overlooking the sea,
Resting in peace there forever I'll be.
From the album "Down East Boy".
