On Monday 8th December 2025, the Evaluation Collective was delighted to welcome Ruth Squire, who delivered the session 'Ethics beyond approval: dilemmas from practice'.
Practicing evaluation ethically can go far beyond the things that do (or don’t) support getting ethical approval. From inception to dissemination, evaluators are faced with a multitude of choices that have ethical dimensions, including what to evaluate, who participates, and how findings should be communicated and applied. In some cases, those choices aren’t entirely within their control.
Using findings from research with 13 evaluators of access and participation work about their ethical dilemmas and practices as a starting point, we explored together how we manage ethical practice - as evaluators, organisations, and as a sector.
