It’s National Safe Work Month, and we’re excited to highlight the Spark North East Link Tunnels D&C team, which was named as a finalist in the 2025 Australian Workplace Health & Safety Awards Best WHS Technology Deployment and Adoption Award for the scabbling gantry - the latest innovation making tunnelling safer and more efficient on North East Link!
Stretching 12 metres long, this acoustic container moves through the tunnel on a custom-built gantry system. Inside, robotic arms are used to expose the concrete arrogate of the tunnel lining to prepare for tunnel roof construction.
Once a high-risk task, this innovation is another example of how we are using smarter ways to deliver safe outcomes as we build the North East Link Tunnels.

Webuild, as part of the Spark Joint Venture, is delivering the North East Link tunnels. The project will enable a more sustainable future by taking 15,000 trucks off local roads every day and reducing travel times by up to 35 minutes for commuters. Once complete, it will be the longest road tunnel in Victoria.
