Piano Cover Mix:
(Erik Satie,1866–1925),
像是服裝設計師,為美好的體態創造華麗、有故事性的外衣;

🎹 In Memory of Max Tu:Valen Hsu × Jacky Cheung × Faye Wong《The Cloud Knows? The Departed Lover Has a Sky》Piano Cover Mix
I was fortunate to grow up in the golden age of CDs.
My way of listening to music is old-fashioned—
I love flipping through lyric booklets,
reading the photos, liner notes, and credits with quiet reverence.
One name I could never overlook was Max Tu.
While most people focus on singers or songwriters,
arrangers often remain the unseen heroes.
Yet “Max Tu” left a deep impression on me.
My favorite albums—Faye Wong《Sky》,
Valen Hsu《The Cloud Knows?》, and Jacky Cheung《No Regret》—
all proudly bear his name.
Especially Faye Wong《Sky》, which he almost entirely arranged—
brilliant in every detail, still timeless today.
When I learned that Max Tu passed away in an accident on November 1,
I was filled with sorrow and disbelief.
Searching through his works, I was stunned—he had arranged over a thousand songs,
including pieces I once performed like Faye Wong《Sky》and A-mei《Truth》.
From countless classics, I selected three ethereal, elegant, and expansive ballads
to form this tribute suite: 《The Cloud Knows? The Departed Lover Has a Sky》.
Since it honors a legendary arranger, the structure had to be equally refined.
It became the most intricate Piano Cover Mix I’ve ever created.
It opens with the gentle rhythm of Jacky Cheung《The Departed Lover》,
followed by Valen Hsu《The Cloud Knows?》,
then both verses intertwine in delicate counterpoint.
When the chorus arrives, Faye Wong《Sky》floats in softly like drifting clouds,
lifting the longing higher and higher.
The interlude quotes 《Walking in the Air》
from the British animated classic The Snowman,
symbolizing flight through memory and time.
After landing, 《The Departed Lover》returns as the main theme,
with 《The Cloud Knows?》echoing gently alongside.
At the final section, an unexpected modulation (A major → D major, since they are a perfect fifth apart, making the modulation smooth.)
ushers 《Sky》to center stage with grandeur.
Through musical montage, I blend the melodies of the three songs,
layering up to three piano tracks for emotional depth.
The coda features a touch of Erik Satie (1866–1925)
and his timeless piano piece 《Gymnopédie No.1》,
also heard in the Japanese drama Long Vacation.
Coincidentally, this year marks the 100th anniversary of Satie’s passing.
The piece fades into a heavenly stillness,
its harmony unresolved, leaving only quiet light.
To me, arranging is as precious as composing.
It’s the art of designing beauty—like a tailor shaping sound,
or a chef turning ingredients into emotion.
To dedicate a lifetime to shaping songs from behind the scenes
is an act of devotion few will ever see,
but one we will never forget.
With this heartfelt new arrangement,
I offer my deepest respect to Max Tu,
the God of Arrangement in my heart.
May you roam freely in a higher sky,
forever playing the music you love most.
