In Western Victoria, there is a small outcrop of decomposing rhyolitic rock from the early Devonian era. Within this rock are incredible geodes, and smoky quartz crystal clusters of both semi-precious and precious gem varieties existing here. This rhyolitic rock was released by incredibly large and explosive volcanoes, and as you'll see in this video, some of them might've been so large that they might've altered the climate planet wide.

The Mooralla gem field is one of many lava flows, and ignimbrite layers, that are associated with the Rocklands Volcanic group. This entire group has been almost completely buried beneath the Murray and Otway sedimentary basins, and thus only very tiny parts of them outcrop. These basins have almost completely covered up the past volcanoes and calderas that existed here, and thus, it's been almost impossible to deduce where the source was for these eruptions... That is... until now. Using magnetics, we are able to peer beneath the Murray and Otway basin, to reveal these incredible caldera looking outcrops.
