Come along as I hunt for Dugway geodes in the Utah desert! These geodes formed millions of years ago in volcanic ash beds and are lined with quartz crystals — often druzy, smoky, or even faintly amethyst-like. The hollow spaces inside were created by trapped volcanic gas bubbles, and over time, mineral-rich fluids deposited the quartz crystals we now crack open and admire.
I found full, unbroken geodes on this trip — not just surface scraps or broken pieces. It takes some effort and digging, but when you pop one open and see that sparkle? Totally worth it.
⚠️ IMPORTANT TIP if you're heading out to Dugway:
IGNORE Google Maps if it tells you to turn down Pyramid Pack Road. That road is rough it will get you there but you wont like it . Instead, go just a little farther down the main road — you'll see the actual entrance to the Dugway geode beds. It's a much safer and more direct route.
This is public land and completely free to dig on — just bring tools, water, and respect for the land.
