Hawaii is a global biodiversity hotspot, home to over 25,000 unique species, with more than 90% of its native terrestrial plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. This remarkable isolation, combined with diverse ecosystems ranging from volcanic landscapes to lush rainforests and coral reefs, has allowed species like the Hawaiian honeycreeper (Drepanidinae) and the Hawaiian monk seal (Neomonachus schauinslandi) to evolve distinct adaptations. However, Hawai‘i also has one of the highest rates of species extinction due to habitat loss, invasive species, and climate change. Protecting its rich biodiversity is essential to preserving the ecological and cultural heritage of the islands.
