Grand Rapids police release bodycam video showing fatal shootout

Newly released police body camera and dash camera video shows the moments a 51-year-old man opened fire on Grand Rapids police officers during what authorities describe as a “high-risk traffic stop,” prompting officers to return fire and kill him.

The shooting happened Saturday on Tremont Boulevard near Covell Avenue NW on the city’s west side. According to the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD), the incident stemmed from a domestic violence call earlier in the day. A woman initially contacted police around noon, and later called 911 again just before 4 p.m. to report that the man was threatening to shoot himself.
