I'll be showing you how to present like Kevin Hart on this week's episode of MasterTalk. Visit https://www.rockstarcommunicator.com/ to attend one of my FREE LIVE online trainings.
1. Trying different communication styles makes you better at all of them at once. (0:49)
The most impressive thing I can say about Kevin is how versatile he is; whether it’s comedy, podcast guesting, recording an audio book or shooting a video for a movie or even social media, he practices every single style on communication out there at the same time, all the time and he’s been doing it for decades. This is how to present like Kevin Hart.
The advantage Kevin has and many other legendary stand up comics, is that what you learn in one area of communication starts to apply to others. If you can stand up on a comedy stage with just a microphone and speak, given how hard that is, you’ll bring those skills into formal presentations or writing a book in the same way he would write a comedy set.
The lesson here for all of us is to try communication methods we aren’t comfortable with. If you don’t like the camera, start making small videos that you can share with your close friends. If you don’t like to sing, then practice karaoke, the breath of knowledge it gives you for your overall communication skills is just amazing, period. That desire for you to try all of them will make you better in public speaking overall.
2. The better you understand the tools you’re given, the better your work becomes. (2:56)
What I like about Kevin is he owns his personality in any setting he’s in. Whether it’s a podcast guest appearance or a comedy set, he likes to be funny all the time and joke around. He’s also very intense and has very high vocal projection when he talks, some people like it, other people won’t and that’s the point. Kevin is successful at what he does for a living because he spent a lot of time thinking about what he does exceptionally well at from a communication perspective.
Every great speaker we admire shares this same idea. The only thing that they all have in common is that they’re unique, there’s only 1 Kevin Hart or 1 Dwayne Johnson or 1 anyone you want to name and that’s the point. Technique will only get you so far, but it’s identity and who you are that will get you to the top in the same way Kevin reached the top of his industry. This is how to present like Kevin Hart.
The lesson for all of us here is that even if we don’t have to be funny like Kevin, we should instead take inventory of what our toolbox is. What are our communication superpowers? What are we good at in this skill? If we’re more introverted, maybe we’re phenomenal listeners, everyone’s good at something in communication, so make a list, reflect on it and try and see how you can use those skills to share your ideas with the world like Kevin has.
3. Communication is a life-long journey, so enjoy it every step of the way. (4:52)
Everyone sees Kevin in the spotlight and say wow, he must’ve been born that way, when in reality, the man works so hard on everything that he does. When he interviewed for the Joe Rogan podcast, Joe even commented on the fact that he was on calls the minute right before they went air. The same is true with Kevin’s comedy specials, he spends years messing up in small clubs, until his jokes land perfectly and then he does the actual special and nails it.
Nothing important in our life is an overnight process and took Kevin years to master this important skill and he’s still getting better everyday. The same analogy applies to you too. Just because you don’t speak like Kevin or anyone else you admire doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try, it means you need to find a compelling reason as to why you want to stay on track and keep working on your communication skills, simple as that. This is how to present like Kevin Hart.
Kevin’s long journey in the entertainment space has turned him into a world class entertainer and performer, and for the ideas you have to share with the world, I hope his story inspires you to think about ways to improve your communication skills over decades to achieve what you’re meant to do with what you care about in this world.
