BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations account for around 20-35% of hereditary breast cancers, 5-10% of all breast cancers, and 15% of ovarian cancers. Genetic testing has revolutionized breast cancer sreening, allowing those who test positive for BRCA gene mutation to take preemptive measures to reduce their risk of developing cancer.
Risk factors for BRCA gene mutation include a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, multiple cancer diagnosis within a family, cancer before the age of 50, male breast cancer, and Ashkenazi Jewish heritage.
Testing for the BRCA gene is easily and painlessly done through a saliva sample. Patients will typically receive results within a month.
