Independence Pass connects the Colorado towns of Leadville and Buena Vista with Aspen via Colorado Highway 82. I first drove the route east to west in the summer of 2016 and then revisited it via Aspen in the Fall of 2017. It crosses the Continental Divide in the beautiful Sawatch Range. While it's not a scary drive its important to know that oversize and overweight vehicles are strictly prohibited from using the Pass at any time due to narrow and winding roads, tight switchbacks and steep inclines. Vehicles are limited to 35 feet and violators can face a steep fine.
