This installation of Artist Margareta Hesse at the event of the Rheinlicht Festival in Schaffhausen showed how even reduced use of lasers can create spectacular tense emotions. The big church was the perfect place to display four different laser art install scenes.
Margareta Hesse used custom laser technology manufactured by LaserAnimation Sollinger for her displays.
The Rheinlicht festival took place from 29.10.-09.11.2025 in the Münsterkirche in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
The barriers of light appear to block the passage, but thanks to a safety mechanism in the devices, viewers can pass through the obstacles of glistening red rays of light unharmed.
The immersive installations invite visitors to discover this very special, focused light and observe up close the dance and rotation of millions of tiny points of light in the aura of the light beam.
In Caged Light, a glass object with only one laser beam, a fascinating dramaturgy unfolds like in a showcase stage, a small world in which the laser beam, nourished by the mist of the water surface, experiences the various manifestations of light. Sometimes it glows brightly and seems to burst into flames behind the glass, sometimes it seems to slowly fade away.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
The painter and light artist Margareta Hesse lives and works in Berlin. Inspired and fascinated by the “immateriality” of laser light, which appears as tangible matter in fine haze, Margareta Hesse has been developing expansive, walk-in, interactive sculptures with red lasers since 2008. Since then, Margareta Hesse has been represented in numerous solo exhibitions and light art projects in Germany and internationally.
