Hello massage friends! I'm Rachel Perry Gilbertson. I've been a medical massage therapist for nearly 25 years. I've always had a fully booked schedule months in advance by giving my clients the spa experience along with results oriented medical massage.
I have clients who have been regulars with me for 20 years, they stay with me because I have spoiled them rotten and ruin them for all other therapists. Their words, not mine.
In this video series I am going to share with you, things that I believe have made me stand out from other therapists over the years. As I'm heading into retirement, I would love to share with you the knowledge that I have gained in almost a quarter century.
One of the things that I am known for is having the "world's most comfortable massage table". many of my clients are fortunate enough to have massages in some of the nicest spas in the country and even the world. When they return, I always ask them how it went. Before they even tell me how the massage was, they tell me how the table wasn't as comfortable as mine. it was too narrow or too hard and they found that they were not as relaxed.
I've heard many therapists over the years say that that part doesn't matter, they're not in it for the spa effects, they're all about the therapy and while I agree that being a competent therapist is very important, why would you not want to make your clients as comfortable as possible so that they can relax even more. Just because it's a therapeutic massage does not mean it shouldn't be a full sensory experience. If your client gets up after 90 minutes and they're stiff from laying on a hard table that defeats the purpose.
I'm going to show you my table set up so you can have the world's most comfortable massage table too.
To start with when I ordered my table, I paid for an upgrade to have extra padding built-in and it's extra wide.
If you already have a table obviously this doesn't apply. If you're looking at new tables, I would highly recommend this.
To start with I have a layer of memory foam. I would recommend at least 2-3 inches thick.
Next, I have a hypoallergenic pillow top for luxurious softness,
That's followed by a table heater, and on top of that a vinyl cover so that I can sanitize my table between every client.
Soft, cozy, fresh smelling sheets and blankets are also so important!
If a guest walks in and sees wrinkled and rancid smelling sheets it does not inspire confidence in the cleanliness of your space.
On the foot of the table, on top of the blanket I also have a heated throw. This allows me to customize the heat for them. We're heading into the colder months here in the Midwest so most of my clients come in with cold feet. They love climbing into the toasty warmth.
You can add a sheet over the throw like a duvet to change between clients. A twin size waterproof mattress cover also works well.
I hope this inspires you to upgrade your table and see what your clients think of the changes. I would also love to hear any cool tips or tricks that you have to make your table stand out among other therapists.
