Tomás Doncker has been a pillar of the New York music scene for over twenty years. He started working downtown in the fertile 1980s punk-funk explosion. He quickly found himself among the ranks of New York's pioneering musical elite. He started working as a guitarist in revolutionary groups like James Chance & The Contortions; Defunkt; J. Walter Negro and The Loose Jointz; and much more, making him a prime mover on the “No Wave” scene in downtown New York in the early 1980s. Eventually, he went international, traveling and recording in Japan with jazz pianist Masabumi Kikuchi, and producing sessions studio and composition with Bootsy Collins, Yoko Ono and the Grammy-nominated Reggae vocal group, The Itals, among others. In 2014, guitarist Tomás Doncker released “Moanin 'At Midnight”, a tribute album to Howlin' Wolf. The idea started to spin in his head in 2013 and he found that the songs written by Willie Dixon and performed by Howlin 'Wolf had very real stories, even when the work was done. However, something was done to bring them closer to our time. In this year of 2020, "Moanin 'At Midnight" is relaunched in a special edition with three live tracks, two Wolf classics like "Smokestack Lightning" and "Backdoor Man" plus Donker's original track, "Shook Down". Tomás Doncker has a long history in the jazz and blues scene in New York, has very recognized vocal skills and tries to attract them into production action in this one, without doing very well. However, that point against him is recovered with the work of the guitar, giving a psychedelic flavor to the production, although it does not come very close to the naturalness of Hubert Sumlin's solos that defined the sound of Holwin 'Wolf. "Moanin 'at Midnight": The Howlin' Wolf Project, received luxury treatment in its first vinyl edition. Remastered, repackaged and expanded from the original 2016 CD, this definitive edition was produced, mixed and designed by James Dellatacoma at Bill Laswell's Orange Music Sound Studios, mastered by mastering engineer Michael Fossenkemper, and had his lacquers mastered and cut by Geoff Pesche at London's iconic Abbey Road Studios. The result is a sonically impressive launch that takes an already acclaimed classic of the modern blues to a new level. The seed for this album germinated during a critically acclaimed run at the NYC SummerStage during the summer of 2013. This tribute has some flavor to “This Is Howlin 'Wolf's New Album”, published in 1969, which was intended to give Hendrix a bluesy sound. Wolf, in an experience that was not very well received by fans of the blues legend. However, Doncker manages to go further, as he does not limit himself to reinterpret, but uses his experience and knowledge to take the music of one of the greatest blues artists in his history to a wider field. although not very close to the naturalness of Hubert Sumlin's solos that defined the sound of Holwin 'Wolf. On the track "Little Red Rooster" a classic recorded for the first time by Howlin 'Wolf, as "The Red Rooster" under the label Chess in 1961. Doncker manages to go further in "Little Red Rooster" because he does not limit himself to reinterpret, but uses his experience and knowledge to take the music of one of the greatest blues performers in its history to a wider field doing very well. Your music will be included in each collection you find. I assure you. The ten tributes found on this album will capture your heart and make you want to go back and check out not only the entire Wolf catalog, but also the Donckers. Tomás Doncker's inspired makeover for “Moanin 'At Midnight”, which owes a lot to the original, but is so sharp and dirty that it adds hum, whistles and moans to one of the greatest songs in Blues history. There is absolutely nothing for the Blues purists to twist their panties here; but this is mainly aimed at open-minded music lovers who are not afraid to "change". His electrifying tribute to Howlin Wolf hits the target and inspires the soul to have fun and the body to move. Too good!!!
