Update on White House ASL Access - Nov 14 ,2025 - Brittany Shrader, Esq, Director of Legal Services

Hi! I’m Brittany and I’m the legal director here at NAD.

I have another update for you on the White House interpreter case.  On Thursday, we went to court to discuss 2 clarifications the White House sought concerning Judge Ali’s order that the White House must provide interpreters for all press briefings.

First, they wanted a limitation to the order – that they did not have to provide interpreters for press briefings announced with less than 24 hours notice. Judge Ali rejected this. The White House must make good faith efforts to ensure interpreters regardless of how last minute a  press briefing is.

Second, the White House wanted clarification about the meaning of “press briefings.” We argued that press briefings should include any event the purpose of which is to provide information to or take questions from the press, regardless of how the White House labels the event. The White House wanted a more limited definition – only those events labeled as “press briefings” or “press conferences.” The judge is going to think about the arguments and give us a decision later.

For now, the White House must at least provide interpreters for the events we all agree are covered by the judge’s order – events labeled press conferences and press briefings. Our next status report will be on November 21. The White House is appealing the judge’s order. More to come as the case progresses.
