Dr. Kevin Riehle discusses the core principles of counterintelligence in the age of cyberwarfare, online propaganda, and emerging AI capabilities.

Dr. Kevin Riehle's new book, "Counterintelligence at its Core", begins with deceptively simple questions: What is the core purpose of counterintelligence? What does it involve?

To answer these questions, Kevin Riehle explains how counterintelligence analysis supports the mission of thwarting adversaries, and how a foreign entity's intelligence cycle can be exploited, disrupted, or manipulated to gain decision advantage.

Dr. Riehle provides case studies of operations involving the Soviet Union and modern Russia also illustrate how counterintelligence-derived information can support broader US national security decision-making.

Dr. Kevin Riehle is a Lecturer in Intelligence and International Security at Brunel University in London. Dr. Riehle literally “wrote the book” on Russian Intelligence, along with a definitive book on Soviet Defectors, as well as dozens of papers on Russian espionage, spycraft, military strategy, and cold war history.

Dr. Riehle’s career includes over 30 years of experience in Intelligence and Counterintelligence roles with the Defense Intelligence Agency, US European Command, and FBI, culminating in the position of Senior Policy Officer at the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence.

Dr. Riehle has BA in Russian & Political Science from Brigham Young University, an MS in Strategic Intelligence from the Joint Military Intelligence College, and a PhD in War Studies from King’s College London, as well as a Diploma from the Command and Staff Program at the US Naval War College. He is also the recipient of numerous awards and honors.
