Oct 1995 EMD E8 Cab Ride, Riding the Historic Rock Island E8 no. 652, Rock Island Rocket Streamliner!
The Rock Island Rocket was the premiere named train of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, a competitively fast streamliner linking Denver and Colorado Springs, Colorado, to Chicago, Illinois, prior to the modern Amtrak era. One of the locomotives assigned to this train was General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD)-built E8 no. 652. Built in March 1952, this high-powered diesel engine avoided being scrapped, and eventually found its way to the Baldwin City & Southern Railroad and Midland Railway Museum, in Baldwin City, Kansas. On October 19, 1995, videographer Walt Loevy recorded a cab ride in E8 no. 652 over the former Santa Fe Railway Baldwin City-Ottawa branch. Rock Island no. 652 would eventually come under the ownership of the Manly Junction Railroad Museum in Manly, Iowa, by March 2014.
