This excerpt describes policies by US President Lyndon Johnson and others that led to what economists call "The Great Inflation" of the 1970s. In 1979 President Jimmy Carter appointed Paul Volcker as Federal Reserve Chair to deal with a problem that his predecessors had no answer for. With heroic political and personal courage Volcker enacted policies that caused short term pain but carried enormous long term benefits for the US and global economy.
Paul Volcker died on December 8, 2019. He was an American Hero.
