"Gibraltar has spoken, it is time now to do her bidding". Those were the closing words of Chief Minister Fabian Picardo's victory speech after the results of the election were announced at around half past seven this morning. He warned against complacency and told his supporters he would not tolerate arrogance in their ranks. Mr Picardo criticised his opponents for what he described as their shoddiness and lack of effort but offered an olive branch to Opposition Leader, Daniel Feetham, for them to collaborate on fundamental issues that affect the Rock.
The turnout was just over 70 per cent. Good by international standards but the lowest in Gibraltar since at least 1980. The Chief Minister said everyone would have to consider carefully why the number of voters had not been so high this time.
