AI chip giant Nvidia is reportedly developing a China-specific AI chip to bypass U.S. export restrictions.
According to Reuters, Nvidia is preparing a new AI chip based on its latest Blackwell architecture, aiming to begin mass production as early as June.
Let’s dive deeper into what this strategy means.
First, Blackwell is Nvidia’s latest AI chip architecture, designed for high-performance AI processing.
However, the U.S. government recently effectively banned the export of Nvidia’s key AI chip model, the H20, to China, citing national security concerns.
The H20 was the only AI chip Nvidia could legally sell in China, but that door has now closed.
In response, Nvidia is developing a new, lower-cost AI chipset for China.
While this new chip offers lower performance compared to the H20, its simpler manufacturing requirements mean it’s expected to be priced around $6,500 to $8,000 per unit—a significant drop from the H20’s $11,200 price point.
Notably, this chip will use standard GDDR7 memory instead of advanced high-bandwidth memory
and will be based on the server-grade GPU RTX Pro 6000D.
Nvidia appears to be targeting China’s demand for AI server GPUs with this new product.
The Chinese market accounts for 13% of Nvidia’s total revenue, making it a critical segment.
After the U.S. blocked H20 exports, Nvidia initially tried to develop a downgraded version of the H20,
but that plan fell through.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently stated in an interview that
the older Hopper architecture could no longer be modified to comply with U.S. export restrictions.
Ultimately, Nvidia shifted to an entirely new approach:
designing a custom China-only chip using the latest Blackwell architecture.
Nvidia’s move is more than just a product launch—
it’s a strategic maneuver to bypass tightening U.S. tech export controls.
Whether Nvidia can regain momentum in China and navigate growing regulatory pressures remains to be seen.
