After four years of clean-ups, education, and collaboration with local NGOs and authorities, we have released Operation Ghost Farms - Reclaiming Waters - The #Documentary.
Abandoned fish farms, or "ghost farms," are neglected aquaculture sites that become environmental hazards, polluting marine ecosystems with debris, plastics, and abandoned equipment that entangles and kills marine life. This degradation harms local fisheries, tourism, and coastal communities. Since 2019, Healthy Seas has worked to address this issue, launching major cleanup efforts in Greece in 2021 and 2022. In 2024, we expanded with Ghost Farms: Reclaiming Waters, targeting multiple sites in western Greece. Our approach includes mapping, stakeholder collaboration, and recycling collected waste, with fish farming nets repurposed into high-quality nylon by Aquafil. The initiative aims to restore marine environments and raise awareness of ghost farms' broader impact.
