The African empire that is now a lost civilization that the history books almost never mentions. I had the opportunity to visit the city of Aksum (also spelled Axum) located in Northern Ethiopia. It is geographically positioned in the center of the Tigray region. It is said to be the headquarters of the once mighty Axumite Empire. The Axumite Kingdom once consisted of (or governed part of) countries such as Eritrea, Yemen, Sudan, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Djibouti and Somaliland.
This ancient African Kingdom is one of the wealthiest least spoken of ancient empires on the planet. It even outlasted the Roman Empire (in terms of avoiding a decline in power) during that time. The Aksumite Empire conducted trade routes and commerce between distant lands that expanded well into modern day southeast Asia (India) and Western Europe (Rome). The aksumites are lauded for their architecture among other things.
I witnessed obelisks (tall monuments) that were constructed approximately 1700 years ago. During my visit to the City of Axum I was also shown several coins that the aksumite kingdom used as official currency of their time. Having your own currency in the form of coins during that time is an amazingly advanced aspect of living for African people especially during the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th centuries.
Aksum is also home to the storage place of the the Ark of the Covenant, which is a biblical relic containing tablets of the Law, by which God delivered the Ten Commandments to Moses at Mount Sinai. The city of Axum is filled with known and unknown history.
