Club swinging was a common form of functional physical readiness training in the US Army many years ago. Master of the Sword COL Herman J. Koehler taught it at West Point beginning in 1885. Soldiers at Fort Benning (Moore) reintroduced it in the early-1990's, and it quickly spread into the civilian community. It has many benefits and can be done by both young and old. Today I am training at the Rock Island Arsenal. It is located on a Mississippi River island between Rock Island, Ilinois and Davenport, Iowa, not far from where I grew up practicing in an old German Turner gymnasium. Club swinging is best practiced outside if the air is clean and weather conditions allow. One correction - War Chief Black Hawk was born just off the Island in Rock Island, but the Arsenal was the land of his people.
