From Rochester, NY, the real name behind this song is Marlene Torre, as she both wrote and performed this hauntingly beautiful gem, that was released on 7" on Fine Records in 1966. It was backed by a more upbeat song called "It Can Happen!!" and shows a very creative young woman with a lot of attitude, more than I'm used to from that particular era.
I was almost spooked when I first heard how similar sounding "Since You've Gone Away" is to the music of Mazzy Star, a band that was formed almost 25 years later. The degree to wich it captures the atmospheric essence of the Mazzy Star-sound is just amazing.
Since You've Gone Away/It Can Happen!! is a pretty rare record, with only about 500 to 1000 copies pressed. It's certainly a good thing then that one can buy a digitized version of this single - and a lot of other rare and out of print records - from the online record store Amoeba.
