Herr, Unser Herrscher is the opening chorus of St. John’s passion as written by Johann Sebastian Bach. In this piece of music, Bach sets Christ’s passion as told by St. John, to music.
St. John’s passion, otherwise known as Passio secundum Joannem is an oratorio written by Bach, during his first year as director of church music in Leipzig. It was first performed on 7th April 1724, at vespers on Good Friday shortly after his 39th birthday.
The chorus Herr Unser Herrscher is composed for four parts SATB. It follows the A - B - A pattern.
